Reid promises to knock out Felix "Tito" Trinidad.
In
a bold statement, former Olympic gold medallist and current WBA super welterweight champion,
David Reid said that he will not run from the power of Felix "Tito" Trinidad
(36-0 30 KO's) like De La Hoya did and predicted he will knock out of
Trinidad. "I won't be running from him like Oscar did," Reid
said. "A lot of people who don't know boxing think Felix is going to kill
me. But I'll be the one putting him to sleep."
Reid who attended the "Fight of the Millennium" said he saw Trinidad
fight for 12 rounds and saw Oscar De La Hoya run to much from Trinidad's power. At
the end of the match, Reid turned to his promoter, Dan Goosen and said "I
want that man", referring to Trinidad.
It will be only the 15th pro fight for the 1996 Olympic gold medallist, whose fast track to boxing stardom
would get a rocket boost with a win over the only boxer to beat De La Hoya. "Felix Trinidad beat the man, so now I'm going to beat the man who beat the man," Reid said. "People
want to see the best fight, and this is the one." The on-again, off-again fight finally came together for
good last week when promoter Don King moved the fight forward one night so not to conflict with a pay-per-view card already set
by rival promoter Bob Arum.
It will be the first outdoor fight -- once a staple in the 1980s and early 1990s --
in Las Vegas since 1996. Caesars Palace is constructing a 10,000-seat arena just for the event.
"David wants to prove he's the golden man, not the golden boy," said Reid's
longtime trainer, Al Mitchell. "I think it's going to be a great fight. You've got a
comer and a boxer. But David can rumble too."
Finally, Reid took a snap at De La Hoya by saying, "Tough men don't
run". Implying that De La Hoya was a chicken for running. All this
talk from the confident Reid could just be pre-fight hype or could he be the
real deal and dethrone Trindad from his belts. We'll see on March
3rd.
