Shane Mosley batters Fernando Vargas to win by TKO

February 26, 2006 -- Mexican boxer, Fernando "El Feroz" Vargas fought a valiant fight in front of a packed-house at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas against former champion Shane Mosley, but couldn't get a win due to a battered left eye which made referee Joe Cortez stop the fight.

Vargas' (26-3) left eye began swelling early in the fight, and by the fifth round his eye was severely swollen almost shut close.

Mosley (42-4, 36 KOs) got off to a quick start, popping his jab at Vargas and landing the cleaner more accurate shots. Mosley continued to land jabs and good body shots. As the rounds went by, Vargas' eye continued to swell, but it didn't seem to effect his performance. Vargas came on strong during the middle rounds, fighting on the inside making Mosley visibly tired and exhausted.

By the end of the eighth round, Vargas' left eye was completely closed, but referee Joe Cortez allowed the fight to continue.

Mosley got his second wind in the ninth and used his jab to peck at Vargas' eye. Vargas continues to punch back with just the sight from one eye.

After the round, referee Cortez is seen discussing with Nevada Athletic boxing commissioner Mark Ratner on the condition of Vargas' eye and whether to stop the fight. The bell rings and the fight continues

Cortez finally called a halt to the bout at the 1:22 mark of the 10th round after Mosley landed several shots to Vargas' head.

"I was wondering why they stopped the fight," Vargas said. "I was the one pushing the action, backing him into the ropes. I definitely want a rematch. Let's see what he says."

At the time of the stoppage, two of the judges had scored the bout 86-85 in favor of Mosley, while another had it the same score for Vargas.
