Legendary baseball
player and Major League Baseball Hall of Famer, Tony Pérez, has teamed
up with Men’s Health Network and Merck/Schering-Plough Pharmaceuticals
to participate in Strike Out High Cholesterol: A Program to Help Lower
LDL Levels, a national cholesterol education program. Pérez and the
Strike Out High Cholesterol program will tour Minor League Baseball
parks during this summer’s baseball season to raise awareness about high
cholesterol and its two sources, food and family, among Latinos.
Approximately half of all Hispanic adult men have high cholesterol and
Pérez is no exception. While most people know that cholesterol comes
from the food we eat, many are still unaware that the majority of
cholesterol is produced naturally in the body, which is largely
influenced by your family medical history.
“I always thought the traditional Cuban food I ate was the reason for my
high cholesterol. However, when changes to my diet and exercise program
were not enough to lower my “bad” cholesterol level, I asked my doctor
what else I could do,” Pérez said. “My doctor explained that there are
two sources of cholesterol, diet and my family’s medical history. We
worked together to develop a cholesterol-lowering treatment plan that
worked for me.”
High cholesterol is a critical risk factor for cardiovascular disease,
which is the single largest killer for Hispanic Americans.
“Understanding high cholesterol is the first step towards better
cholesterol management and given Tony Pérez’s personal story, he is the
perfect role model to deliver these important messages to the Hispanic
community,” said Scott T. Williams, Director of Public Relations, Men’s
Health Network.
Strike Out High Cholesterol: A Program to Lower LDL Levels
Strike Out High Cholesterol aims to raise awareness about the dangers of
LDL or “bad” cholesterol, its two sources, food and family, and how to
help manage the condition. Pérez will visit three Minor League Baseball
clubs throughout the 2006 season, where he will throw the honorary first
pitch and sign autographs. Information about cholesterol and its two
sources will be available at the program booth. In addition, fans will
be invited to register to win a framed, signed jersey from Tony Pérez.
