Canseco sells World Series ring for $40,000

February 23, 2005 -- Former American League MVP, Jose Canseco has decided to rid himself of everything that reminds him of Major League Baseball, by selling his 2000 World Series Ring and other valuable awards

The slugger who played for the NY Yankees in 2000, when they won the World Series, sold the ring for $40,000 on his Web site.

"It's like you're married to an individual for 17 years and all the sudden it's over. You don't want to keep pictures of this individual around, you don't want to keep clothing. You want to sever completely, and that's what I'm doing from Major League Baseball ... the love affair is over."

The ring had 22 major diamonds and 34.5 grams of gold.

Ring selling isn't something new in the Canseco family. Canseco sold his 1986 American League Rookie of the Year ring for $5,100, while his twin brother Ozzie sold his 1990 American League Championship ring for $6,000.

"He's sold his trophies, his World Series rings, sold everything that had true meaning to the average baseball player," Oakland A's teammate Dave Stewart told the Tri-Valley Herald. "He did that because he never really liked the game."

Canseco's new book, "Juiced" had an initial run of 150,000 copies, but it's not clear how many have sold or if there will be an additional printing. The book has been among Amazon.com's Top 20 bestsellers for two weeks, but was not listed among the New York Times Top 35 best-selling books on the paper's hardcover non-fiction list Sunday.
